Winter School on Federalism and Governance 2025

The Institute for Comparative Federalism of Eurac Research, Bolzano/Bozen, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences of the University of Innsbruck announce the 16th edition of their joint program, the WINTER SCHOOL ON FEDERALISM AND GOVERNANCE 2025

The Winter School is a cross-border postgraduate program located in the heart of the Alps.

The 2025 edition will focus on “Federalism and the Separation of Powers”

Dates: 03 February - 14 February 2025

The first week (03- 07 February) takes place at the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Leopold-Franzens-Universität Innsbruck, Austria;

The second week (10 - 14 February) takes place at the Institute for Comparative Federalism, Eurac Research, Bolzano/Bozen, Italy.

The Winter School is designed for participants from all around the world who wish to broaden their knowledge of federalism and multilevel governance through an interdisciplinary and comparative approach. We welcome applications from post-docs, postgraduate & graduate students, researchers, civil servants, employees of national/international organizations or NGOs.

The 2025 Winter School will explore federalism and the separation of powers, focusing on the legal and political structures of distribution systems. Participants will analyze the origins of the separation of powers, including vertical and horizontal distinctions, the role of subnational levels, and checks and balances in federal systems. The program will also assess how vertical separation can prevent authoritarianism.
