School on Digital Constitutionalism

The second edition of the School on Digital Constitutionalism will be held in 2023.

The three-day programme focuses on cutting-edge issues of the algorithmic society. It will open with a keynote and a high-level panel on the first day and then will continue with morning lectures and afternoon workshops on the other two days. This year, the focus will be particularly on digital sovereignty and extraterritoriality of law, policy and technology. In the last years, we have experienced challenges to the traditional idea of territorial boundaries. In the digital age, the question is increasingly about how to ensure the protection of fundamental rights and the limitation of powers in a transnational dimension. This requires to examine the articulation of digital sovereignty and its scope, and, therefore, the organisers decided to focus on extraterritoriality as a space to discuss the evolution of digital sovereignty. 

The School aims to create a multi-stakeholder environment where scholars, practitioners, students and experts in the field of law, sociology, technology and economics can exchange views and opinions.

The idea has been conceived within the framework of the research group on “Algorithmic State, Market and Society” which was launched during the inaugural conference on “Constitutional Challenges in the Algorithmic Society” held at the University of Florence and European University Institute in May 2019.

The School is jointly hosted by the University of Florence (Italy), the European University Institute (Florence, Italy), Bocconi University (Milan, Italy), and Católica Global School of Law (Lisbon, Portugal).

The School is coordinated by professors Oreste Pollicino, Giovanni Sartor, Andrea Simoncini, Hans-W. Micklitz, Amnon Reichman, Erik Longo and Giovanni De Gregorio.
