Update Announcement

Due to the circumstances arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, we have decided to review the organisation of the forthcoming IACL Roundtable: 'Democracy 2020: Assessing Constitutional Decay, Breakdown and Renewal Worldwide' scheduled to take place on 10-11 December 2020:

  • Possible Online/Partly Online Event: We are looking into organising this Roundtable as an online or partly online event and we are currently reviewing the draft Roundtable structure to modify it for this potential fundamental change. No final decision has yet been made on this due to the fluidity of the context surrounding the pandemic and lockdown internationally, but we will issue an update on this soon.

  • Submission Deadline: We are extending the deadline for submissions from today (1 May) to Monday 1 June 2020. We will endeavour to provide a response to applicants by 1 July 2020.

  • Roundtable Scope: Given the profoundly changed global landscape due to the pandemic, we will welcome abstracts that directly discuss the impact of COVID-19 on democratic rule. However, we do not seek to re-orient the Roundtable to focus exclusively on the pandemic. We continue to welcome submissions that focus on other issues less related, or unrelated, to the pandemic.

  • Submissions: Those who have already submitted an abstract need not do anything further. However, you are welcome to revise and re-submit: if doing so, please ensure that you use the e-mail subject 'RE-SUBMISSION: Application - Democracy 2020 IACL Roundtable’. We would emphasise that there is no requirement to revise and re-submit. We will treat any abstracts that are not revised and re-submitted as live applications.

You can find the original call for papers here (please note that the call for papers refers to the dates 10-12 December. The dates will now be 10-11 December).

We wish to take this opportunity to thank the many people who have already submitted abstracts and expressed interest in the Roundtable. We are still looking forward to what will certainly be a landmark global event and we will provide further updates on the Roundtable in due course.

Best wishes,

Prof. Wojciech Sadurski and Assoc. Prof. Tom Gerald Daly
