About the Centre

The Global Centre for Democratic Constitutionalism, based at the UCL Faculty of Laws, aims to advance scholarly understanding of democratic governance, the rule of law, and constitutionalism. As a research community with a global perspective, the Centre’s primary focus is to explore how constitutional resilience can be achieved in electorally competitive political systems. The Centre is currently supported by the Leverhulme Trust.

Few, if any, of the global risks facing humanity can be addressed without the leadership of democratic governments. However, democratic constitutional governance is currently in global retreat rather than advancement. While the challenges of democratic decline and backsliding are well known, they are often framed solely in terms of politics or law. The Centre recognizes that these threats to constitutionalism and the rule of law also endanger our global efforts to tackle the existential issues of our time: climate change, migration, pandemics, nuclear proliferation, and terrorism, to name just a few.

The Centre’s program of activities includes internal and external research seminars, lectures, hosting major international conferences, and regularly convening scholars working on these themes. In addition to its permanent members, the Centre also includes visiting fellows, postdoctoral researchers, and doctoral students.
